Honouring Spanish Language Day Across Canada
At CANHE, we believe that language is more than words—it's identity, history, and a bridge between cultures. That's why we are incredibly proud to have led the way in securing official recognition for Spanish Language Day in Canada.
In April 2021, our journey began with a historic achievement: provincial recognition from Ontario and the first-ever City of Toronto proclamation declaring April 23 as Spanish Language Day. This milestone marked the beginning of an annual celebration that now echoes from coast to coast.
Since that first step, 11 additional cities and provinces have joined in recognizing the beauty, contributions, and cultural richness of the Spanish language. Thanks to our continued advocacy, proclamations have followed from the Province of British Columbia—our first on the West Coast—and the cities of Aurora, Calgary, Edmonton, Markham, Newmarket, Ottawa, Regina, Richmond Hill, Saskatoon, and Toronto once again.
These proclamations are more than symbolic gestures—they are public acknowledgements of the vibrant and growing Spanish-speaking community in Canada. They honour the heritage of 20 Spanish-speaking nations and the countless individuals who bring their language, traditions, and stories to enrich the Canadian cultural landscape.
Each proclamation is a step toward a more inclusive, multilingual Canada—one where the Spanish language is celebrated, respected, and heard.
🌟 We’re proud. We’re grateful.
